Kwara Poly Sacks Lecturer Over Student Extortion Scandal

In a major move to uphold academic integrity, Kwara State Polytechnic has dismissed a senior lecturer, Mr. Abdul Olarewaju Hassan, over allegations of extorting students and manipulating their grades for financial gain.

The revelations of extortion, which have long been a whispered reality in the institution, reached a peak with substantial evidence implicating Mr. Hassan. As a former head of the Estate Management and Valuation Department, he allegedly turned extortion into a profitable scheme, amassing millions of naira by exploiting students. Those who refused to meet his financial demands reportedly faced severe academic repercussions, jeopardizing their academic future.

Mr. Hassan's influence was reportedly bolstered by his close ties to the institution's rector, Dr. Abdul Jimoh. Despite numerous petitions and complaints lodged against him over the years, these allegations were often ignored or suppressed. However, recent developments brought enough pressure for action to finally be taken.

This incident not only highlights the systemic issues of corruption but also raises questions about the institution’s commitment to maintaining academic standards. The dismissal of Mr. Hassan is a significant step, but it underscores the need for deeper reforms to prevent such practices from reoccurring and to restore faith in the institution's academic integrity.

Students and stakeholders now call for greater transparency and stricter oversight to ensure accountability within the institution.
